This is for you if...

...it feels like a constant struggle for your child when it comes to reading and spelling. You have faced countless battles where homework turns to tears and it seems no matter how hard they try, they keep falling behind. If reading is a daily challenge for your child and their confidence seems to be slipping, there are solutions for turning things around right now.  If you are ready for your child to meet or exceed their academic goals, this is for you.

Hello, my name is Stephanie Brown and I am the founder of Words Matter Tutoring.

I love seeing children grow and succeed in every area of their lives. I was blessed to begin my reading journey with a mother who took the time to teach me how to read before I began Kindergarten. This opened a world of adventure that inspired me to read and even write books in my elementary years. It stirred a passion in me to teach others just as my mother taught me.

I journey with many students who have wrestled with the foundational skills of reading, writing, and comprehension. By coming up with a plan of action uniquely tailored for your child, he or she can advance up to multiple grade levels in just 1 semester with only two 1-hour sessions per week utilizing the Barton System’s Orton-Gillingham based program, which is a highly effective method, and has provided remarkable results for over 70 years. It has a track record of reversing Dyslexia.

Tutor sessions may be fulfilled online nationwide or in-person for schools and residents in the South & East Valley of the greater Phoenix area. Arizona residents commonly qualify for ESA funds to cover all tutoring fees!

TESTIMONIALS:

~ "E" was a 6-year-old just starting to learn the alphabet. In only 6 months of going through the Barton System with me, she was already reading whole paragraphs and writing complete sentences on her own. This is just one reason why I so strongly believe in this program!

~ I began tutoring "N", a young man on his way to graduating high school. His greatest challenge was spelling. I realized he needed an approach that he could connect with to remember spelling rules. He loved his 2 cats, so I made flashcards with his favorite cat photos tagged onto each spelling rule. He began an incredible incline with his spelling through simple visual aids that he connected with to improve memory.

About the Methods We Use

When you’re looking for a tutor, it’s not just about finding someone with a great personality; it’s about finding someone who uses teaching methods proven to work for learners with dyslexia. Not all reading instruction is created equal. For children with dyslexia, a specialized approach is essential for building a strong foundation for literacy. The most effective tutoring is grounded in the Science of Reading and uses explicit, systematic instruction. Let’s look at the gold-standard methods you should look for in a qualified dyslexia tutor.

The Orton-Gillingham approach is a highly respected and effective method that has been helping students with dyslexia for decades. It’s not a specific curriculum but a framework for teaching that is direct, systematic, and sequential. It breaks reading and spelling down into smaller, manageable skills, starting with the most basic concepts and building from there. This method ensures there are no gaps in a child’s learning. A tutor using this approach will tailored lessons specifically to your child’s needs, moving at their pace, and constantly reviewing skills to ensure mastery.

One of the key elements that makes Orton-Gillingham and structured literacy so effective is the use of multisensory learning. This simply means that lessons engage more than one sense at a time—typically sight, sound, touch, and even movement. For a child with dyslexia, creating more pathways in the brain helps solidify learning. A multisensory lesson might involve seeing a letter, saying its sound, and tracing its shape in sand all at once. This hands-on approach makes learning more memorable and helps connect the abstract concepts of letters and sounds to concrete experiences.

Structured literacy is an umbrella term for evidence-based programs that are effective for teaching students with dyslexia. The Orton-Gillingham is one of the original and most influential forms of structured literacy. This approach is built on the idea that instruction must be systematic, cumulative, and explicit. It covers all the essential components of reading, including phonology (the study of speech sounds), sound-symbol association, syllable instruction, morphology (the study of word parts like prefixes and roots), syntax (sentence structure), and semantics (meaning). A tutor trained in structured literacy provides a clear roadmap for learning to read that leaves no room for guessing
